CSK Fans Stunned as MS Dhoni Steps Down, Ruturaj Gaikwad Named New Captain for IPL 2024

In a surprising move ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced the replacement of the legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni with Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain of the squad.

CSK made the announcement through a statement on their official website, stating that MS Dhoni had voluntarily handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the commencement of TATA IPL 2024. Gaikwad, who has been a crucial part of the CSK squad since 2019, has featured in 52 matches in the IPL during his tenure with the team.

The decision was confirmed by the IPL through a tweet on the social media platform X, establishing Gaikwad as the skipper for the Indian Premier League 2024 season. Gaikwad boasts an impressive track record in the IPL, having made his debut with CSK in 2020 and subsequently participating in 52 games. His stellar performance in the 2023 season saw him accumulate 590 runs in 16 matches with a remarkable strike rate of 147.50. Additionally, Gaikwad has represented India in six ODIs and 19 T20s.

The defending champions of the 2023 IPL are gearing up to kick off their campaign against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, led by Faf du Plessis, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings clinched the IPL trophy a remarkable five times, a feat previously only achieved by the Mumbai Indians until 2023. Dhoni guided CSK to IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, further securing two CLT20 titles in 2010 and 2014 for the franchise.

MS Dhoni's legacy extends beyond the IPL, as he is widely regarded as one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history. His leadership led India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

The CSK squad for IPL 2024 includes prominent players such as Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur, and the newly appointed captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, among others.
